Exactly what role do parents play in public schools? Should they be involved or should they stay away from the schools and let public education dictate what goes into the minds of our children? Does parental involvement even effect student achievement at all?
As parents these and many other questions are beginning to arise in public education. As Christian parents we need to know where we stand on such questions? When we look at what secular America and the media try to portray public education as then it would be safe to say the parents are not needed in public education in-fact they can become a great hindrance to what public education is trying to do, which is simply to socialize our children in a secular way that promotes tolerance for all. I don’t know about you but to me that is scary because when we hand over our children to the reigns of public education we expect them to come home with a good solid academic education, but instead there minds are being fed full of things such as homosexual tolerance, abortion as a choice, etc. When as parents and especially Christian parents do we put a stop to this non-sense? In fact after looking at 12 of the countries most prolific studies done on parent and the effects that parents have on students academic achievement and self-esteem, one would conclude that parental involvement has no significant impact at all. As Christian parents we certainly know that this is ridiculous considering the Bible specifically talks about how to raise a child. Yet, when a common person reads such studies they have no grounds to argue the difference because they are looking a pure statistics, right? No in-fact these statistics are skewed so far to the left that they are completely unworthy to be read. What these great researchers have done has skewed the operational definition of what “Parental Involvement” means. They simply say parental involvement is nothing more than supervision or showing love for a child. Why do they do this one might ask? Well they do this to sale their study and to push their most ridiculous belief. As a Christian parent we know that the definition of “Parental Involvement” is so much more that horse rubbish. It involves standards, accountability, love, patience, pray, forgiveness, discipline, honesty, trust, and time. I could continue the list on and on because we know its continuous. But more important than any of these is having Jesus Christ at the center of our lives as parents and children. When we begin to let Jesus guide and direct our ways and let His light shine through then we can honestly say that “Parental Involvement” makes all the difference in the world in the lives of our children.
